Blood samples are drawn to make genetic comparisons
between Hellbender populations. |
is not
deserved, however. The Hellbender, Cryptobranchus
alleganiensis alleganiensis, is NorthAmerica’s
largest salamander and occasionally reaches lengths of
nearly 3 feet although twelve to eighteen inches is more
common. Despite its large size and fearsome appearance,
the Hellbender is very docile and can be picked up
barehanded, provided you can hold on! Like all
salamanders, their moist skin is very slippery. These
magnificent creatures are opportunistic feeders, preying
on crayfish, insect larvae and small fish. They are NOT
poisonous, but their wrinkled skin and strange
appearance is often enough to intimidate even seasoned
naturalists. The
Ohio Hellbender Survey recently confirmed that Scioto
Brush Creek still harbors a breeding population of these
strange creatures, which require clean, clear water to
breed. If you have spotted a Hellbender, please contact
Martin McAllister at 740-493-3062. Your report will be
checked and perhaps you too can boast of a creek clean
enough for these amazing creatures! |
