2009 Annual Meeting Highlights
Saturday, January 17, 2009

Temperatures in Southern Ohio fell into single digits on Saturday, January 17, but a group of dedicated Friends braved the cold to attend the Friends of Scioto Brush Creek Annual Meeting at the Rarden Community Center. Approximately 30 people assembled to learn more about the efforts of the Friends of Scioto Brush Creek and hear a presentation from acclaimed herpetologist, Greg Lipps.

Sponsoring a number of education, awareness and involvement activities throughout the year, the Friends of Scioto Brush Creek experienced significant growth during 2008. One of the group’s greatest undertakings during 2008 was a collaborative effort with volunteers from Brush Creek Township and the Village of Otway to establish a community park. Volunteers Thelma Shirey and Marsha Phillips highlighted the community activities sponsored throughout the year. Several community work days, a township cleanup, and fundraisers were sponsored throughout the year. More than $20,000 was raised through grants and community fundraisers.  Click here to see the PowerPoint © Presentation.

Bill Wickerham discussed a Scioto Brush Creek DVD that was developed in collaboration with the Adams Soil and Water Conservation District. The video highlighted the Scioto Brush Creek Day program and a video segment on the Wild Ohio television program. With funds from an ODNR-Division of Soil and Water Conservation, the DVD was distributed to elected officials, natural resource professionals, educators, and local residents.  Learn more about the DVD.

Friends of Scioto Brush Creek Director, Norvel Davis, gave an update on the Forks of Scioto Brush Creek conservation area. This spring, he and a number of volunteers plan to sponsor another tree planting. In 2007, the Brush Creek Township Trustees leased the land at the confluence of Scioto Brush Creek and the South Fork to the Friends of Scioto Brush Creek.

Later, Jeff Montavon recognized Bill Wickerham as the 2008 Best Friend of Scioto Brush Creek. Annually, the Friends of Scioto Brush Creek recognize a member who has significantly contributed to the organization.  Read about Bill’s involvement.

To conclude the meeting, Herpetologist Greg Lipps spoke about the Hellbender Salamander. According to Greg, Captiva Creek in Belmont County has the healthiest population of Hellbender’s in Ohio.  Learn about the Hellbender.

Scioto Brush Creek is recognized as one of the highest quality streams in Ohio.  Your help is needed to keep it that way!
