By Jeff Montavon
Monday, January 19, 2009

Bill Wickerham
(Center) receives the 2008 Best Friend of Scioto Brush Creek
Award. Presenting the award are Adams County Commissioner,
Justin Cooper (Left), and Friends of Scioto Brush Creek Board
Member, Jeff Montavon (Right).
During their annual meeting on
January 17, the Friends of Scioto Brush Creek recognized Bill
Wickerham of the Adams Soil and Water Conservation District as
the “Best Friend of Scioto Brush Creek.” Every year, the
watershed group recognizes a dedicated volunteer who has made a
significant contribution to the organization. Wickerham’s
efforts have pushed forward the Friends of Scioto Brush Creek’s
mission of helping maintain and improve the water quality of
Scioto Brush Creek through education, awareness, and the
involvement of local residents.
Over the past several years,
Wickerham’s involvement with the Friends of Scioto Brush Creek
has expanded the efforts of the group. In 2007, he obtained a
grant from the Division of Watercraft to purchase canoes for
stream cleanups and education events. In May of 2007, he
initiated the Scioto Brush Creek Sweep, a cleanup event in which
volunteers canoe down Scioto Brush Creek collecting trash and
other debris. This fall, he was awarded a grant from the Ohio
Environmental Education Fund to purchase eight additional canoes
to expand the Scioto Brush Creek and Ohio Brush Creek Sweeps.
Wickerham has made important
strives in promoting Scioto Brush Creek in Adams County, working
with landowners, informing local leaders, and communicating with
other natural resource professionals. In 2008, Wickerham was
able to obtain funds to distribute an education DVD promoting
Scioto Brush Creek and the annual field day. The DVD was sent to
educators, elected officials, and interested residents so they
could learn about the stream and the efforts the Friends of
Scioto Brush Creek has made to educated the community.
Wickerham is engaged in every
community involvement effort sponsored by the Friends of Scioto
Brush Creek: planting trees and removing invasive species from
the Scioto Brush Creek Conservation site, volunteering to remove
litter from the highway, lending a hand at the Scioto Brush
Creek Field Day and a number of other activities. His volunteer
efforts have greatly benefited the Friends of Scioto Brush
Creek. Check

Events to learn how you can get involved in Friends
of Scioto Brush Creek activities. |
